After completing a degree in Theology in Belfast, Paul came to Manchester in 1978 as a trainee probation officer and joined Brunswick Parish Church in the inner-city.
When a long-time call of God to "full-time" service grew much stronger he felt it right to change direction and worked for Brunswick Church for a year, before joining the staff of Youth for Christ as a musician and schools-worker, travelling in this country and others for a number of years working in music and youth evangelism. More recently he spent four years as a member of 'Eh! Geoff Mann Band'. Throughout this time Paul and his wife Judith and family - Daniel, Alannah, and Holly - had been based at Brunswick Church, where they had in 1980 responded to a call to live and settle in the inner-city, near the church. As that call developed into a growing desire to work more where he lived - with the local church and area, and in the city - Paul spent some time in YFC's Urban Action team before leaving to form "Urban Presence" with Derek Purnell in 1995. Paul and Judith continue to worship at Brunswick and to live out their long-term commitment to the local area. This, as well as Paul's work, and Judith's work as a local TESOL teacher and area they see as expressions of being "Urban Presence". His vision is to see churches working together across the city and nation putting the common interest - the Kingdom of God - first, before their own, with one of the results being better sharing of resources between urban and suburban areas. In 2002, to free up more time for new ministry opportunities, Paul ended a 10 year period working on the Core Group of "Network", for whom he produced the Network Diary, helped establish Prayer Network and, with Derek, CAN (Christian Action Network). He also left the Management Group of Urban Action which he had been a part of since it began, serving as Chair for 5 years. Apart from input into Brunswick and other churches, Paul is now putting a lot of time into CARISMA, a community organisation he helped set up in response to gang-related violence in Manchester. Through CARISMA he has also been involved in an annual Peace Week and establishing a Street Pastors project, as well as a number of other opportunities and activites. Paul also does some work for Street Pastors nationally, helped to set up churchmcr, a website for and by Christians in Greater Manchester, and is involved with ChangeMakers, a new Community Organising initiative in the city. |
