Our April 2004 RefUrb guest speaker was one of our spiritual heroes, Dr Tony Campolo. We extended RefUrb into two sessions - Wednesday afternoon at Evangel Church, Failsworth, and Thursday morning at Brunswick Church, Ardwick and around 70 urban activists attended each day.

Tony was - as usual - in turn inspiring, provocative, hilarious, challenging and outrageous, and left us all buzzing with ideas and fresh vision. His two talks were relevant not just to those in urban ministry, but to anyone who wants to see the Church being Good News in local communities and in our society. As one person said afterwards: "Brilliant! I'm not sure if I agreed with everything, but he has really got me thinking and re-evaluating."

Tony and his wife Peggy were in Manchester at the start of a 10 day UK tour of speaking enagements. While here we also arranged for him to give the annual Drysdale Lecture for the Nazarene Theological College, and speak at a Leaders' Breakfast and on BBC Radio.

The Rev. Dr. Tony Campolo is Professor Emeritus of Sociology at Eastern University in St. Davids, Pennsylvania and founder of the Evangelical Association for the Promotion of Education (EAPE) which has been committed to what God is doing through Christian people in inner-city America and around the world for over 30 years. He speaks extensively on college and university campuses and makes frequent appearances on television programs like CNN News, Nightline, and Crossfire. Tony is an outspoken advocate for justice and equality, especially for children who are "at risk" in cities, and has helped establish schools and universities in several developing countries.

The author of 28 books, his most recent titles are Revolution and Renewal: How Churches Are Saving Our Cities (Westminster John Knox) and Let Me Tell You a Story: Life Lessons From Unexpected Places and Unlikely People (Word)
